Chloride Ion (Argentometric)

Determine chloride concentration (ppm or mg/L) in water using AgNO₃ titration (Mohr's method).

Typically 0.0141 N for chloride determination.
---
ppm Cl⁻

Formula

Chloride (ppm) = (V_AgNO₃ × N_AgNO₃ × 35.45 × 1000) / V_sample

35.45 = equivalent weight of Cl⁻; 1000 converts to ppm.

Notes

  • Mohr's method uses potassium chromate indicator – endpoint is brick‑red precipitate.
  • For accurate results, pH should be between 6.5 and 9.
  • If using conductometric titration, the same formula applies (volume at equivalence).
